Mmmmmmm where to start? After going to Pagenello in 2003 to play beach ultimate with the Mohawks is encountered freestyle for the first time. I had a short beginner jam with a nice guy called Clay. During the tournament I taught myself the chest roll but that was all until the Brit Open that year. There I was shown how to do the self set and promptly spent the next few days learning to self set and nail delay.
At roughly the same time the Nike
Freestyle campaign was launched across Europe so I downloaded the video and learnt what I
could (the tooth spin being the highlight). Following this I then went to the
Baltic Junior Open in Estonia with the GB Junior team. There I met a Russian
jammer and also learnt a few tricks from the Swedish Junior Women champions
Karolina Hagenbjork and Linda Almljung- Torngren.
From there I practised new tricks on my own, learning some new tricks from downloaded videos but nothing is better than learning from the players themselves. In 2004 I met up with Timmy at the NASS 04 event; it was a good weekend even though I wasn’t feeling great after a month spent in Morocco. I learnt yet more tricks and found out about the Europeans in Viareggio Italy. So that September I packed my bags and crammed myself into another Ryanair flight to compete in the Intermediate Freestyle category in addition to playing Ultimate with Two Hands Asshole.
To my surprise I finished 2nd and won….. a bear???? I have taken what I learnt from the Europeans and I have been practising with a view to enter more tournaments this year. I have to thank Timmy for having the motivation and dedication to put together UKfrisbee, there are plans for competitions in the UK this year and maybe a few shows featuring some international jammers. In the mean time its practise and a search for sponsors so we can go to the worlds in Seattle this year.
